Explainer Video or Product Demo?
Explainer videos and product demos serve different goals in your funnel. Here's how to know which one your SaaS actually needs right now, and when it's worth having both.
If you're building a SaaS product and trying to decide what kind of video to invest in, you've probably run into these two options and wondered which one actually moves the needle. The honest answer: it depends on where your prospect is in their journey, and what you're asking them to do next.
Here's how to think about it clearly.
What each one actually does
An explainer video exists for one purpose: making a stranger understand what you do, and why it matters, in seconds. It's built for someone who has never heard of your product before, or who needs the value proposition simplified into something they can grasp in under a minute. It's emotional, visual, and fast, your elevator pitch, animated.
A product demo answers a different central question: how does this actually work? It's built for someone who's already interested, maybe already in a trial, and wants to see the interface, the workflow, the real experience of using your tool. It's more detailed, more functional, and closer to the bottom of the funnel.
They're not competitors. They're built for two different moments in the same journey.
Where each one performs best
Explainer videos convert better when:
Your landing page is the first touchpoint for a cold visitor
Your product solves a problem that isn't immediately obvious from a screenshot
You need to simplify something technical or abstract
You're running paid ads or social campaigns and need to stop the scroll fast
Product demos convert better when:
You're targeting warm leads already inside a trial or sales conversation
Your differentiation lives in the interface itself
You're selling to a technical buyer who wants proof, not persuasion
You're supporting a sales team that needs an asset to send after a call
The mistake most SaaS companies make
The most common mistake isn't choosing the wrong one, it's choosing only one and expecting it to do both jobs. A demo on your homepage often loses cold visitors before they understand why they should care. An explainer video sent to a warm trial user can feel too vague, they already want the details.
If your budget only allows for one video right now, start with the explainer. It has the widest reach, homepage, ads, social, cold outreach all benefit from a clear, fast, emotional pitch. The product demo can come once you have consistent traffic and you're optimizing conversion further down the funnel.
How to decide for your product
Ask yourself one question: where do most of my lost prospects drop off?
If people bounce from your homepage without ever starting a trial, your problem is comprehension, an explainer video is likely your priority.
If people start a trial but don't convert to paid, your problem is proof, a product demo is likely your priority.
Your funnel data will tell you more than any generic rule ever could.
The bigger picture
Both formats are motion design, just applied to different stages of the same story. And because a well-produced video can be reframed and resized for multiple channels without starting from scratch, investing in one doesn't mean starting from zero when you're ready for the other.
